USBC-ARTI Holds Summer Anti-Racism Workshops
USBC’s Anti-Racism Training Institute of the Southwest (ARTI) partnered with APS and the New Mexico Coalition to End Homelessness (NMCEH) this summer to offer two Undoing Racism ® community organizing workshops in Albuquerque.
The intensive, 3-day workshops were presented by ARTI’s longtime partner in anti-racism organizing, the People’s Institute for Survival and Beyond (www.pisab.org), headquartered in New Orleans.
PISAB and ARTI have worked together for more than 30 years with New Mexico’s leaders in housing, education, healthcare, and community and economic development to understand and undo policies and practices born of the dehumanizing ideology of racism – the single most critical barrier to social change.
The summer workshops brought together participants from APS, the City of Albuquerque, the New Mexico Department of Health (NM-DOH), NMCEH, and numerous organizations that provide direct services in central New Mexico.
Participants examined how their own roles as “gatekeepers” in their families, communities, and jobs give them more influence than they think. Leveraging that influence by networking with others creates the power to undo racism, one policy at a time.
Funding was provided by the City of Albuqerque’s Office of Equity and Inclusion, NMCEH, NM-DOH, and the Albuquerque Community Foundation.
